Growing Africa’s Future | 4P Models for Food Systems Transformation
The session will spotlight groundbreaking insights from McKinsey’s recently published research on the efficacy of public-private-philanthropic partnership (4P) models in driving climate and nature transitions. A special focus will be on their application to Africa’s food systems transformation, addressing the urgent climate action needs within the sector.
Africa’s food industry is on track to reach $1 trillion by 2030, fueled by rapid urbanization, expanding population growth and increasing consumer spend. The pressing need for climate action is impacting all parts of our food system, and in response, governments and companies have been multiplying commitments and actions in areas such as the net-zero transition, biodiversity loss prevention, and broader natural-capital preservation. 4P models can enable these stakeholders to work together to create a better investment environment to build (digital) infrastructure and fund green projects and other interventions that uniquely combine the public sector’s ability to create enabling conditions with the private sector’s scaling ability. For their part, philanthropies are increasingly turning their attention to climate and nature, seeing them as key challenges in their own right and as intimately linked to the core issues of equity and development.
The research identified >30 global solutions, many relevant to food systems that are primed for high and immediate impact through 4P models. This partner event will deep-dive on four investment themes that are relevant to countries in Africa and aligned with AGRA’s 2027 Strategic Plan (i.e., underutilized and degraded cropland conversion, digital extension services-at-scale, smallholder farmer agricultural insurance, and digitally enabled intra-Africa trade). Together, we will discuss the incentives that drive successful 4P collaborations, and create space for you to convene with peers and potential collaborators to take action on these topics.
