One Health
One Health is a collaborative, multisectoral and transdisciplinary approach that works at national, regional and global levels to achieve optimal health outcomes, recognizing the interconnection between people, animals, plants and their shared environment.
Building on 45 years of experience on animal health research in Africa and Asia, the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) carries out One Health projects with national and international partners to prevent and control foodborne diseases, zoonoses, emerging infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance.
Animal Disease Management
In many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), access to essential animal health technologies — such as drugs, diagnostic tools, and vaccines — is often limited, unaffordable, or compromised in quality. ILRI’s animal disease management research addresses these challenges through two complementary approaches: Livestock Health Technologies, which focuses on laboratory-based research to develop innovative animal health products, and Livestock Population Health, which emphasizes field-based interventions aimed at improving livelihoods through enhanced animal health management, improved animal welfare, and evidence-informed animal health policies. By combining innovation with practical implementation, ILRI works to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and real-world impact in LMICs.
