The East African Dairy Development project launches its second phase in Tanzania
Upon receiving a grant of USD 25.5 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to expand and upscale its operations, the second phase of the East African Dairy Development (EADD) project which will expand its operations into Tanzania was launched in Dar es Salaam on 28 March 2014.
The launch in Tanzania was attended by more than 200 participants, among them senior government officials and key actors in the Tanzanian dairy sector including the dairy processors, the diary farmers’ umbrella association, the Tanzania dairy board, banks and other micro-finance institutions.
The Tanzanian prime minister was represented by the Deputy Minister of Livestock and Fisheries who read his speech, in which he expressed continued government commitment to the project. This statement was affirmed by the regional commissioner for one of the project sites (Njombe) who instructed the district officials present during the launch to factor in ‘EADD 2’ into their budgets.
During the launch, International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) which is major EADD partner, was represented by Amos Omore, the ILRI country representative in Tanzania and Edgar Twine, a value chain economist. In his vote of thanks, Omore highlighted the government’s commitment as very important and marked the beginning of efforts to achieve co-funding targets. Omore also emphasized that the five EADD2 partners should be viewed as facilitators of an effort that will involve all stakeholders of the project for increased impact.
