In 2024, the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) marks 50 years of innovative livestock research and development. Over the decades, ILRI has played a pivotal role in transforming livestock systems to improve food security, livelihoods, and environmental sustainability. With a strong focus on the Ethiopian context, ILRI’s work has had a far-reaching impact on agriculture and food systems across Africa and the Global South.
This celebration will provide an opportunity to reflect on ILRI’s achievements, recognize the contributions of its partners, and launch ILRI’s new strategy for 2024–2030, which will guide its efforts in addressing the most pressing global challenges, including food security, climate change, and human health. This event will also highlight ILRI’s future goals, focusing on sustainable livestock systems that benefit over 300 million people globally.
Objectives
The ILRI 50th Anniversary celebration aims to:
- Celebrate ILRI’s 50 years of achievements in livestock research and development, focusing on the contributions to food security, livelihoods, and environmental sustainability in Ethiopia and globally.
- Engage stakeholders including scientists, policymakers, partners, media, and the public to foster dialogue on the future of livestock systems and research.
- Promote ILRI’s new strategy for 2024-2030, “Unlocking the Potential of Sustainable Livestock through Research for Better Lives and a Greener Planet,” which outlines the institute's commitment to transforming livestock systems to meet the growing demand for animal products while addressing climate and environmental challenges.
- Highlight key events and milestones achieved over ILRI’s 50-year history, celebrating research breakthroughs and partnerships.

The event will draw participation from a wide range of stakeholders, including:
