Celebrating the International Women’s Day 2019
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) celebrates gender in research
Ahead of the International Women’s Day (IWD) 2019, the ILRI gender team got thinking on how to sensitize agricultural researchers on the importance of gender in research based on the experiences of ILRI scientists.
So, we posed the question: What does gender have to do with vaccine development, or with breeding or even with herd management? Well, some ILRI scientists now see a clear relevance.
We engaged some of them in relating the golden moments – which we have christened the ‘aha’ moments, when they realized that gender is important for livestock development and how that has impacted their work.
We documented these moments in a video collection which serves as part of ILRI’s activities and contributions towards marking the IWD 2019.
We start off by sharing a few of them to mark this day, starting with Jimmy Smith, ILRI director general.

The International Women’s Day 2019 is themed ‘think equal, build smart, innovate for change’ _and seeks to among others look to industry leaders, game-changing start-ups, social entrepreneurs, gender equality activists, and women innovators to examine the ways in which innovation can remove barriers and accelerate progress for gender equality, encourage investment in gender-responsive social systems, and build services and infrastructure that meet the needs of women and girls.
