Framework for identifying and managing environmental and socio-economic consequences of tsetse and trypanosomiasis control and eradication
This project follows the realisation of a need for a methodological framework that can guide evaluation and monitoring of environmental and socio-economic impacts of tsetse and trypanosomiasis interventions in Africa, to serve both as early warning system and timely evaluation of consequences arising from project activities.
It is a one year project that started in June 2005 through June 2006. It is intended to synthesise information on methodologies used and results obtained in relevant studies of environmental and socio-economic impacts of tsetse interventions, and identify best control practices and key impact indicators. This project is managed by International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi, Kenya. Project Objectives/Goals: The overall objective is to prepare an Africa-wide applicable "Environmental and Social Management Framework" to guide implementation of tsetse and trypanosomiasis control projects and to inform policy-makers and development managers on issues relating to environmental and socio-economics in the control and eradication of tsetse and trypanosomiasis in Africa.
- To synthesize information on methodologies used and results obtained on relevant studies of environmental and socio-economic impacts of tsetse and trypanosomiasis interventions
- To develop a framework that will provide guidlines on methodology for evaluating and monitoring environmental and socio-economic impacts and results of tsetse and trypanosomiasis interventions (both in terms of early warning system and timely evaluation of environmental and socio-economic impacts of project acitivities)
- Identify best practices for key indicators for socio-economic and environmetal impact assessments (minimum data set and ways of measuring the indicators) for tsetse and trypanosomiasis interventions
- To develop (advice on) communication and disemination strategy-outreach.
