Evaluating and Enhancing the Impacts of Agricultural Development Programming on Gender Inequalities, Asset Disparities, and Rural Livelihoods
The Gender, Agriculture and Assets Project (GAAP) is a 3 year initiative of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The aim of the initiative is to increase the impacts of agricultural development programmes in reducing gender inequalities, asset disparities, and improving rural livelihoods in Sub-Saharan Africa and South East Asia.
Project Objectives
The overall objective of this grant is to understand the impact of agricultural development activities on women’s and men’s access to and control over assets and to identify the best approaches for designing and implementing projects that reduce gender asset disparities.
1. Build capacity of project teams and their evaluation partners to undertake integrated economic and social gender impact assessments, to collect and analyze sex-disaggregated data, and use the results to design, implement and evaluate strategies to enhance project impacts on women (capacity building).
2. Understand the impact of agricultural development activities on women’s and men’s access to and control over key assets (research).
3. Identify effective pathways for reaching women and reducing gender asset disparities, based on ongoing implementation and cross-project learning.
4. Document and widely disseminate methods, results, and lessons learned about how to build women’s assets and improve livelihoods through agricultural development projects (outreach).
