Jacqueline McGlade, FLS, FRSA

Jacqueline McGlade is Professor at Strathmore University, Kenya, Professor in the Institute for Global Prosperity and Engineering at University College London, UK, and the Gresham Professor of the Environment. Her current research includes projects on One Health, Clean Water and Soils in sub-Saharan Africa and small island developing states looking at impacts of pollution, including particulates in air, microplastics and pharmaceuticals (antimicrobials) in water and soils and community-public health actions; mapping of wildlife, livestock and zoonotic diseases in east Africa; traditional uses of indigenous trees for improving human and animal health in east Africa, measuring community prosperity, DigitalEarth Africa including geospatial data analytics and ecosystem modelling, and cross-sectoral policy and strategy development. Previously she was UN Environment Chief Scientist, Director of Science and Chief Statistician, leading on environmental indicators, data and assessments for the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development. And before that, Executive Director of the European Environment Agency, Director of the UK Centre for Coastal and Marine Sciences, Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Warwick, Director of Theoretical Ecology at the FZ Jülich and Senior Scientist at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in the Federal Government of Canada. She holds a number of key advisory roles including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the European and UK Space Agencies. She has published more than 200 research publications in the fields of environment and health, and produced award winning films and radio series, TEDx talk on Building Resilience to Climate Change and BBC series The Life Scientific.
