Improving cattle health in Tanzania: Some lessons from the Livestock and Fish program
In late 2016, the CGIAR Research Program on Livestock and Fish produced several synthesis products, including a series of briefs on its animal health work carried out between 2012 and 2016. This brief reviews interventions and tools to address priority diseases affecting cattle in Tanzania.
Meat and dairy are important livelihood strategies for rural households in Tanzania. Most cattle in Tanzania are kept by smallholder households under extensive systems. Over the last five years, laboratory and field scientists have significantly enhanced their understanding, and capacity to mitigate the effects, of major cattle diseases in Tanzania, particularly East Coast fever and contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP).
This brief reports on some results from this work.
