Assessing Soil Carbon in Global Grasslands: The Importance of Sustainable Livestock Practices
Background
Soils are the second largest carbon pool on the planet and play an important role in climate change mitigation, food security and nutrition of billions of people. Improving management practices in grasslands can boost the capacity of soils as carbon sinks, and help countries reach their climate goals. FAO has recently released its first Global Assessment of Soil Carbon in Grasslands, which measures the baseline of stocks of soil organic carbon in grasslands and estimates their potential to sequester soil carbon. This webinar presents the key findings of the analysis and shares insights on the state of soil carbon stocks in grassland systems in the world.
Objectives
The objective of the webinar is to present the key findings of the global assessment of soil carbon in grasslands that FAO published in February 2023. The webinar will also show the quantified comparisons of soil carbon stocks among grasslands with different management practices.
Expected outcomes
- Raising awareness of the impact of livestock practices on soil carbon stocks in grasslands.
- Improving understanding of the latest available data on the state of soil carbon in grasslands.
- Encouraging the use of sustainable farm management practices to enhance soil carbon sequestration.
Target audiences
The webinar addresses livestock, climate and environment experts and welcomes all stakeholders from public and private sectors, NGOs, research institutes, and CSOs interested in the assessment of soil carbon stocks in agri-food systems.
