Sustainable Agricultural Intensification and Integrated Natural Resource Management to Improve Rural Livelihoods in Sudan Savanna of West Africa

This task force focuses its activities within the Sudan Savannah agro-ecological zone of northern Nigeria. In order to influence development through widespread adoption of technologies and improve income of stakeholders, enabling conditions in the realms of markets and policies need to be fostered, along with harmoniza¬tion of distinct institutional agendas and practices among a diversity of actors (e.g., farmers’ associa¬tions, entrepreneurs, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Community based organizations (CBOs), development-oriented organizations, government ministries, and research and extension agencies). The objective of the Sudan Savanna Taskforce is to use innovation platforms to enhance agricultural productivity and income of rural farmers along the value change without degrading the natural resource base. ILRI is contributing to this project by working with national partners to evaluate feeding strategies for livestock that can improve income to integrated crop-livestock farmers. An innovation system approach helps to identify and link actors within the livestock sector for more favorable integration of technical interventions within the economic and social environment.
