Naomi Kemunto is a PhD graduate fellow at ILRI, registered at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Her research seeks to quantify antimicrobial use (AMU) in semi-intensive broiler farms in Kenya, evaluate on-farm poultry production practices to determine behaviors that drive AMU and contribute to the selection of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), design and test interventions to reduce AMU, as well as analyze the costs and benefits of the tested interventions. The research will be carried out in the Kenyan counties of Kiambu, Machakos, and Kajiado. Naomi holds a Master of Science in Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics, as well as a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. Prior to joining ILRI, Naomi led the establishment and implementation of a mobile phone-based infectious national disease surveillance program called the Kenya Animal Biosecurity System (KABS) program, which collects data on domestic and wild animal diseases in Kenya. This program was a significant step towards enhancing the country’s preparedness and response to emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. Her research interests center around epidemiological methodologies, innovative surveillance techniques, and economic factors influencing infectious diseases and their dynamics.
