Dr Martin Barasa is currently serving as the VSF Germany Regional Head of Programs based at Nairobi, Kenya and overseeing programs across Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Sudan. Martin previously worked for VSF Suisse in South Sudan in various capacities, the last four years (September 2014 to April 2018) as the Country Director South Sudan. Martin holds a bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Nairobi, Kenya, and master’s degree in Development Studies from St Paul’s University, Kenya. Martin has over 20 years of experience in humanitarian assistance and development aid cutting across multiple sectors funded by various donors. Experienced in program design and development that address agricultural and livestock production systems, livestock disease control and surveillance systems, community-based extension service systems, value chain development and market systems development, agricultural value chain private enterprise development and private-public partnership building. Has strong familiarity with the Project Management Cycle and M&E frameworks and systems; management of contractual services and works, management and coordination of partnerships, advocacy, and policy development initiatives with local, national, and regional institutions. Also experienced in rural development approaches and appraisal techniques, including participatory epidemiology techniques, community participatory evaluation techniques, capacity building initiatives, cooperatives, and rural enterprises development. Accomplished trainer and has led the development of several training manuals for the training of frontline animal health service providers. Has attended trainer of trainers training on Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards and is currently active in global, regional and country level networks that promote sustainable livestock production systems, animal health and animal welfare.
