Daniel Girma Mulat

Laboratory Manager

Daniel Girma Mulat is a Lab Manager and Environmental Researcher at ILRI’s Mazingira Centre, overseeing the greenhouse gas (GHG) measurement lab and conducting research on circular bioeconomy and climate-smart livestock interventions. His research covers anaerobic biogas and renewable energy technologies, GHG measurement and mitigation, and GHG monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) to support carbon markets and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). He employs environmental science, microbiome science, bioreactor engineering, spectroscopic GHG measurements, and machine learning to address climate change and foster sustainable food systems. He collaborates with social and health scientists to measure co-adaptation, socio-economic, and health co-benefits of livestock manure biogas digesters—attracting both impact and carbon financing.

He holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering from Aarhus University (Denmark), a joint MSc in Advanced Spectroscopy from the University of Helsinki (Finland) and Leipzig University (Germany), an MSc in Environmental and Energy Management from Twente University (Netherlands), and a postgraduate certificate in Machine Learning and Data Science from the University of Texas at Austin (USA). Previously, he worked as a Research Scientist at the University of British Columbia (Canada), a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) (Norway), and a Lecturer at Jimma University (Ethiopia).
