With great sadness, the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and CGIAR acknowledge the death of Ephraim Mukisira Amiani who passed away on 9 December 2024. Mukisira was director general of the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) from 2005 to 2014.
Upon his retirement from KARI he worked at ILRI from 2014 to 2016, where he represented the institute at national and regional meetings, pioneering a role as ILRI’s Kenya country representative. He later served as the chairman of the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) from 2016 to 2019.
Throughout his career, Mukisira was a strong supporter of ILRI, of livestock sector development, agricultural research for development and strengthening local capacity within Kenya as a whole.
After he left ILRI, he served as the chair of the Kisii University Council from May 2017 to 2023 when he relinquished the position due to illness.
He was a distinguished scholar having studied at the University of Nairobi for his undergraduate degree and proceeded to Louisiana State University, USA for his MSc studies before obtaining his PhD from McGill University in Canada.
Our thoughts are with his wife and children.
