Using system analysis and modeling tools to develop improved feeding strategies for small-scale crop-livestock farmers in Southeast Asia
The purpose of the project is to identify sustainable feeding strategies based on local resources managed by smallholders, whose economy and livelihoods are dependent on crop-livestock systems.
Project Objectives/Goals: The project will aim at enhancing farm feed resources by optimizing the contribution of sweet potato, legumes and other feed sources to year-round feed availability, livestock productivity and household income. Outputs: 1.Novel pig feeding systems based on sweet potato, forage legumes and other feed sources toincrease feed availability, livestock productivity and household income, under the environmental and economic constraints in the project area. 2.Value-added local products (e.g. sweet potato based silage and high protein supplements for livestock obtained from sweet potato and legumes leaves) for improved employment, household income and livestock nutrition. 3.Strengthened local feed market linkages for value-added local products.
