Uncovering Zoonotic Viral Threats using sequencing and bioinformatic approach to Pathogen Monitoring in the Kenyan Environment

Uncovering zoonotic viral threats using sequencing and bioinformatic approach to pathogen monitoring in the Kenyan environment

The goal of the project is to identify viral threats from livestock waste in Kenyan abattoirs.

Overview

The project aims to support global and national biosecurity threats by strengthening zoonotic disease surveillance in Kenya, a hotspot for emerging infectious diseases. Advanced pathogen detection technologies and bioinformatics analysis will be used to enhance early warning systems, thus mitigating the risk of zoonotic spillovers that could escalate into global pandemics.

Objective

To determine the prevalence of viral pathogens in livestock abattoirs using a multi-faceted genomics approach.

Expected outcome

Rapid identification and mapping of the presence of pathogens across livestock abattoirs in Kenyan landscapes.
