While livestock contributes to climate change, it is also crucial for improving livelihoods, healthy diets, building resilience and empowering African women and youth. How can we realize its untapped potential to transform Africa’s food systems while reducing its climate and environmental impact?
At 2024 Africa's Food Systems Forum (AFSF), the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) will make sure that livestock systems don't get stuck in time. New and existing climate-smart innovations and technologies are key to transforming livestock production systems so they become more productive, sustainable and resilient. ILRI will spotlight livestock innovations in line with this year's summit theme, 'Innovate, Accelerate, and Scale: Delivering Food Systems Transformation in a Digital and Climate Era,' while prioritizing gender diversity and youth inclusion.
However, food systems transformation will not take place with just innovations alone. ILRI will not only showcase innovations but also engage in activities that push discussions further. Climate-smart livestock systems need diverse advocates from governments, funders, and the private sector to ensure long term prosperity, food security, nutrition and climate goals for African nations. Additionally, these innovations need public-private partnerships and enabling policy and fiscal environments to attract investments that scale up these climate-smart livestock innovations.
